I've been into music as long as I can remember.
My first "gig" was in my grade 2 musical where I played the lead role in Pinocchio. I probably got the gig because no one else wanted to do it. (I've always had a hard time saying "No")
Lifelong music lessons since then have brought me to today.
Before I started working as a sound engineer and producer, I dabbled in live performance. I guess when I say 'dabble', I mean well over 3000 live shows :)
A few thousand gigs later, and here I am performing all over North America as a professional musician since 1995.
I think my recording career may have started when I was about 9 or 10. I would carry around my parent's tape recorder and try to record my favourite songs off of the radio, wherever I was. I also used to make my own sound effects tapes to use in school plays that we would write and perform...like the sound of a motorcycle being fired up, or the sound of a toilet flushing. I liked playing with the 'treble' and 'bass' knobs on the car stereo too...now known as shelf filtering!
I currently still play in a number of different bands and groups:
THE SPECK BROTHERS
My brother Thom and I play live music together under the name 'The Speck Brothers' (oddly enough). We're an acoustic guitar/bass guitar duo with lots of vocal harmony and a crazy sense of humour. Very often we'll bring in a drummer for bigger shows and bigger stages.
SLIGHT OF HAND
This is an all original music project that I joined in 2011. Ramping up to play a few more live gigs in the GTA area, this 4 piece band is where I get to play my Gibson Les Paul and sing in a heavy rock band. We'll be releasing a few free MP3 downloads just as soon as I can lay down my vocal parts :-)
THE LEWIS MOORMAN BAND
I also have a great time holding down the bottom end by playing the bass in this 4 piece rock/funk band. Drums, bass, guitar/vocals and a percussionist round out the lineup when we get the dance-floor jumping!
MARSHALL DANE and THE LAW
Marshall Dane and the Law, is another project that my brother and I are involved in. As featured harmony vocalists in 'The Law', Thom and I keep order in the court and on stage, in this sometimes 8-piece rockin' country band fronted by our good friend Marshall Dane.
A big sound from some of the best musicians in Canada!
The Essentials were a 4 (sometimes 5) piece acappella group based in Toronto, Ontario. We released 5 CDs over our long career with a gold record and a #1 record under our belts. We sang on many radio jingles and had done quite a few anthems for national sporting events. Although this group is not together anymore, my brother Thom and I are still making music with a solid vocal harmony based sound.
(since we were half of this group, I think that only makes sense)
